This is a short-legged hound with long, sweeping ears. The word Basset means "low-set." This breed is a fast runner; do not be fooled by the short legs. They can cover great distances in a short time, so keep this dog fenced in, or he will run off on you. His short coat which is in Foxhound colors - black, tan, and white, or any of these together - can be kept free of dead hair with a weekly brushing. The ears and eyes must be checked regularly for infections. This dog adapts to town or country life very well. A good walk each day is exercise enough for this breed.
