Beagles are one of the oldest hound breeds, bred for centuries to hunt hares by scent. The Beagle is active and extremely intelligent, which makes them devoted friends and companions. They can be kept as either a house dog or a kennel dog, and they will be happy either way. Beagles have a tendency to roam, they require a fenced yard and strict handling. This breed is especially good with children. Ears should be examined regularly to prevent infections. Daily exercise is important.
